Teacher Profile
The Sisters of St. Joseph (CSJ) who founded and operate LIS have
long enjoyed a reputation as fine educators. All twenty-two staff
members who work at LIS do so because they want to aid our newest
immigrants. With one exception, the teachers are members of the CSJ
community, including one Consociate member. These are, for the most
part, new careers for these teachers whose educational backgrounds and
past achievements are impressive. This vast experience, together with
the humanitarian concerns of the group, results in a rate of student
success and harmony that defies the differences in languages and
cultures.
Volunteer Profile
Many wonderful friends and associates assist this ministry to our
refugee and immigrant students. LIS is fortunate to have volunteers who
offer a variety of enriching activities. A social worker spends a half
day each week providing much needed information and assistance with
multiple problems met by individuals struggling to manage their lives
in a totally new system and culture. Two Consociates, a married
couple, join the staff weekly for one-on-one conversation opportunities
for those trying to improve their speaking ability. Through the year,
LIS is also assisted by Jesuits conducting conversation classes, a St.
Joseph Worker supporting teaching and office functions and an intern
from the Augsburg College Computer Science Department supporting the
LIS website. |
