Student Profile
A wide diversity of students come to Learning In Style (LIS). From
geographically dissimilar areas, they represent sixty-four countries
spread over five continents. Ranging in age from eighteen to
ninety-three, this wonderful variety is both a blessing and a challenge.
The differing geopolitical climates of origin affect the extent of
our students' abilities to read and write in any language. Some have
highly developed oral skills but can neither read nor write. Contrary
to this pre-literate grouping, others are not only literate but might
have college degrees as well. It is also not unusual to find students
from each of these situations speaking one or more additional languages.
With immediate needs ranging from an elementary survival English to
a level of functional usage, the responses and rates of advancement
differ radically. Some come to LIS completely unschooled, others with
limited or interrupted schooling and a fair number are already skilled
learners. It is the LIS goal to provide the opportunity for each of
these students to achieve a functioning ability within studies of
academic English (grammar, usage, reading, writing and citizenship;
plus applications in Math and Computer classes) to the level of Pre-GED
achievements.
