Ministry of Education
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet were integral to the founding and development of the parochial school system in Minnesota and North Dakota. When the Sisters arrived in St. Paul in 1851, they established St. Joseph's Academy. Eventually, Sisters served in nearly 90 elementary and secondary schools in Minnesota and North Dakota. In 1905 the Sisters of St. Joseph founded The College of St. Catherine, a women's college in St. Paul.

Today we continue to enthusiastically embrace ministry in education. Sisters still are present in elementary schools and secondary schools in Minnesota and Texas. Some Sisters also teach in colleges and universities.
The changes in religious life as a result of Vatican II allowed the Sisters of St. Joseph to embrace their founding mission-- to respond to the unmet needs in society. Consequently, many Sisters left our institutional schools and began teaching children who were struggling with learning and immigrants who desire to learn English. Teaching English as a Second Language and GED preparation are some of our growing ministries.
